INTRO TO BEEKEEPING

If you are thinking about becoming a beekeeper and don’t know where to begin, The Valley Hive has the perfect class for you. During our Introduction to Backyard Beekeeping class, you will learn everything from the history of beekeeping to the lifecycle of the honeybee along with everything you will need to know to start your own backyard hive. This two-hour class is being offered during the fall in a classroom setting and is perfect for those wanting to purchase bees in April. Upon competition of this class, you can continue your beekeeping journey in the Spring with our hands-on beekeeping classes in the bee yard. We will not be getting into hives for this class. Here’s what you will learn:

  • History of Beekeeping
  • Life cycle of the colony and basic bee biology
  • Time commitment
  • Equipment needed
  • Protective gear
  • Space requirements/hive placement
  • Los Angeles City Ordinance
  • Registering your hive with the county of Los Angeles

BEGINNING BEEKEEPING 6 WEEK COURSE

Objective: This six-week course is for aspiring new beekeepers, established beekeepers who wish to broaden their base of knowledge, and members of the community who desire a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to competently manage a colony of honeybees. 

All classes are held on Sunday and will take place at The Valley Hive located at 10538 Topanga Cyn Blvd in Chatsworth. Class will meet from 1pm – 3pm on the following dates:March 1st, March 8th, March 15th,

March 22nd, March 29th, April 5th.

Topics:  Upon completion, students will be expected to demonstrate satisfactory knowledge of ten crucial areas of study including:

1.        History of Beekeeping

2.        Honeybee Biology

3.        Anatomy of a Hive

4.        Tools of the Trade

5.        Inspection Techniques

6.        Beekeeping Ordinance for Los Angeles.

7.        Diseases, Pests and Pathogens

8.        The Beekeeper’s Season in Southern California

9.        Setting Up an Urban Apiary

10.      Troubleshooting Problems in the Hive/Situational Awareness

 Additionally: Two hours of lab work in our apiary is required to pass the class.  Apiary availability will be posted every Monday, and students are expected to make the time to accompany a Valley Hive Beekeeper during a typical inspection at one of our apiaries.

Required material: The Valley Hive will provide the required textbook for this course, “The Backyard Beekeeper” by Kim Flottum.  Students will also be provided with a binder which will be filled with material and notes throughout the course.  Participation in completing the “Bee Binder” is mandatory to successfully passing the course.

Price: Cost of the course is $250.  On the first day of class students will receive a coupon for 20% off a one time purchase.

What Can I Expect?

In 2 hours, you’ll see what a honeybee experiences over the course of a lifetime, and what a beekeeper experiences over the course of a day. Enjoy the serenity and beauty of the surrounding landscape. Visit our showroom complete with a fully-functional glass observation hive, venture into an apiary, and finish up with some raw, local honey. During the apiary portion of the tour, you’ll put on a bee suit and assist the beekeeper in opening active hives and performing routine hive inspections.
