Apivar is used to treat for varroa mites within a bee colony. The active ingredient in Apivar is amitraz. This is a popular treatment because it is versatile enough to be used in both hot and cold temperatures. Application strips are placed in between the brood frames and must be left in place for a minimum of forty two days. Apivar cannot be used if there are honey supers on the hive. It is recommended that a mite test of either a sugar roll or alcohol wash is performed prior, during and after treatment.
